VEHICLE TRANSFERS

Vehicle transfers are a very big part of the Louisiana Civil Law Notary’s duties.  The State of Louisiana has established policies and procedures through the Office of Motor Vehicles to ensure that every vehicle registered in the State of Louisiana has a legal and marketable title.

All vehicle transfers in Louisiana must have a title, signed by the seller, usually in the presence of a notary as well as a Notarized Bill of sale or Act of Donation.  When purchasing a vehicle from an individual in another state it is very important that you obtain all the necessary paperwork from the seller.  In addition to the Title and Bill of Sale, you will also need a copy of the seller’s out of state driver’s license or an Affidavit of Non-residency.  This document proves that the previous owner did not bring the vehicle into the state without proper registration and title.  Without this document, the purchaser will have to pay taxes on the blue book value of the vehicle as well as the sale price of the vehicle. 

 

Special rules also apply for salvaged vehicles, reconstructed vehicles, Katrina area vehicles and other vehicle transactions.
